My Summer Podcast Playlist

My Summer Podcast Playlist

I’m a podcast lover. I listen to them pretty much all year round. But - summer presents a unique opportunity for enjoying them. Much like one would enjoy a juicy novel while relaxing by the pool on summer vacation. I tend to go for slightly lighter fare in my podcast choices during the summer months. Below is a list of podcasts that I have been listening to - or- are on my “to listen” playlist.

Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard

I got into this podcast on a lark. Dax Shepard (or Mr. Kristen Bell as he jokingly calls himself) sits down with the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow, Brene Brown, his wife Kristen Bell (I HIGHLY recommend listening to both pods with her in them - they are AMAZING), Gillian Flynn and even Dr. Phil to talk about…well everything. The focus leans heavily into self-reflection, which I really enjoy. Dax can be a bit over-bearing but is still a likable guy with a very healthy does of self-awareness. The interviews aren’t overly heavy. Dax does a good job of keeping the mood relatively light and funny.

Keep It

I’ve mentioned this podcast many times. And that’s because it’s awesome. Po culture and political commentary given in a biting, funny and insightful way. Everything from Taylor Swifts beefs to the Democratic debates get discussed on this podcast.

Where Should We Begin? with Esther Perel

Imagine being a fly on the wall during a couple’s first therapy session. That’s basically what this podcast is. Relationship therapist Esther Perel gives us insight into a new couple’s issues on each podcast. We hear there exchanges - in their own voices. I was worried that I would feel awkward or intrusive while listening nut that was not the case. The sessions are raw, sad, intimate and I find myself coming to my own personal insights while listening to them.

Pop Culture Happy Hour

A quick 30 minute overview of what’s happening in music, TV and films. At the end of each show the hosts say what they’ve been loving that week.

David Tennant Does a Podcast With…

David Tennant does a podcast with…everyone from Krysten Ritter, Olivia Colman, Jodi Whittaker to Ian McKellen. I am a sucker for actors sitting down and talking about their lives and their work together. Plus I have a thing for David Tennant’s Scottish brogue - and it’s on full power on this podcast.

Business Wars

My brother recommended this podcast to me. I was reticent at first since I’m not into business podcasts. But this podcast is really about stories. And I LOVE a good story. The current story they are telling are the Cereal Wars which follows the rise of Kellogg’s Post and General Mills and how they came to be. They also talk about Netflix vs Blockbuster, Ferarri vs Lamborghini, Gibson vs Fender to name a few.

Noble Blood

Noble Blood is a new podcast from Aaron Mahnke (creator and host of Lore, Cabinet of Curiosities and Unobscured). The podcast centers around the bloody history of royalty. The first episode deals with the imprisonment and death of Marie Antoinette.

Directionally Challenged

Hosted by Vampire Diaries alums Candice King and Kayla Ewell, Directionally Challenged is a interview podcast for 30-something women dealing with everything from singlehood, marriage, kids, work and everything in between. It’s a fun and engaging podcast that is pro-woman and all of the experiences we have.

Revisionist History

Another podcast I’ve talked about before. Unexpected and quirky stories that make you look at things we encounter on a regular basis in a new way. This season’s episodes deal with everything from the the law school admissions test, to what really happened the night of the Boston Tea Party.
