January Favorites: Streaming, Movies, and Movies

January Favorites: Streaming, Movies, and Movies

Hello, hello all! We are at the end of the first month of 2022. Already. This month felt two weeks long. I haven’t done a favorites post in ages and wanted to do ne for January because I have a few things that I want to talk about and share. I’m currently on a no-buy (you can watch my video about it here) so I haven’t been purchasing any new makeup or clothing and it’s been…okay. I have a feeling things will get harder in the next two months but we shall see.

Streaming

I have had a hard time getting into tv shows lately. I just don’t have the concentration to commit to anything too intense or too complicated. And the shows I have been watching kind of reflect that. One is based on a book series I read ages ago and so I, for the most part, know what’s going to happen. And the other is a silly, funny spinoff show for a character from The Suicide Squad.

A Discovery of Witches

I read the A Discovery of Witches book series by Deborah Harkness, some years ago and really liked it. And when the TV series based on the books debuted, I loved the first season. The second season, not so much. Like the second book, it was bloated, but also had a weird rushed pace that made the stakes feel lower than they did in the books. Whole swathes of the story were skipped over, and usually, I am understanding of that since a book is very different from a TV show or a film. But a lot of major moments that were plot and character-based were removed and replaced with things that were inconsequential to the story featuring characters that were not at all important. Much like the book series, season three seems to have righted the ship. I’m enjoying the pacing and the sow is hitting the most important plot points. There are still characters that are given larger roles in the show than they have in the books, which I honestly could do without. But I am enjoying the final season almost as much as I did the first.

Peacemaker

I reluctantly started watching this show, and now I am recommending it to anyone who enjoys superhero shows and films and even those who don’t. If you like slight subversive, weird, quirky entertainment you will enjoy Peacemaker. it’s not a show that I can say a whole lot about because of spoilers, but I am enjoying how the story is subverting the expectation of what a character like this is actually like. The jokes can be silly and a bit juvenile at times, but the story itself is pretty smart. And there have been times where I have literally cried from laughing so hard.

Encanto

This film and its soundtrack have had a hold on me for the last two months. I listen to the soundtrack pretty much every day. I’ve watched the film multiple times. I’m sure you all know this film and have heard its music a million times - specifically We Don’t Talk About Bruno, but if you have been holding out because you’re tired of hearing about it. Just watch it. I promise you will love it.

FKA Twigs - Caprisongs

FKA Twigs released her “mixtape” album Caprisongs, at the beginning of January, and I have been listening to it non-stop. It is a beautiful collection of songs about self-love and the rediscovery of self-confidence. FKA Twigs was in a physically abusive relationship (allegedly) with actor Shia LeBeouf and these songs reflect the journey of coming out of a toxic relationship that has decimated your self-esteem. But the songs aren’t sad. Quite the contrary. The songs are beautiful and uplifting with bomb-ass beats. It’s a celebration of the return to self. My personal faves are Meta Angel, Lightbeamers, and Papi Bones.

What have you all been loving in this new year so far? Let me know in the comments!
